If you’ve been thinking about getting into the American Express points collecting game, in my opinion, right now is a great time to do it.

That’s because the credit card issuer has launched a number of enhanced welcome bonus promotions to try and entice you in and they offer serious rewards.

Back in June I wrote a blog post explaining why I felt it was a good time get an American Express Gold Card. Here I explained the key features and benefits of the card, so it is worth revisiting.

However, as it turns out, now is an even better time to apply, as I doubt you will see better welcome bonus offers this year. There are three or four really good offers currently available and if you own a business of literally any description, one is an absolute no-brainer.

All of these offers run until October 14, 2025, so you have a little bit of time to mull them over but not too long. If you’re looking to build a nest egg of reward points and you are eligible for the welcome bonuses you certainly won’t want to miss out.

American Express Preferred Rewards (Gold) Card

This card is best for absolute beginners or people returning to the points game after a few years out. Normally the welcome bonus, after hitting the required spend threshold, is 20,000 Membership Reward Points (MRP).

A reminder that MRPs can be converted into Avios (the air mile currency of British Airways, amongst others) at a ratio of 1:1.

This was increased on a special offer for a period in June to 35,000 MRPs, but now American Express are offering a 40,000 MRPs on a limited time promotion. If you meet the eligibility criteria you will receive the 40,000 points after spending £5,000 in the first six months of having the card.

There is no annual free for the first 12 months with this card so it is a relatively risk-free way of amassing 40,000 points easily.

Furthermore you, can increase that bonus to 45,000 by using a referral code. Contact me if you want a referral link for the extra bonus points.

This is a great welcome bonus offer, but there is an even better one!

AMEX Business Gold Card

The American Express Business Gold Card is very similar in appearance to Preferred Rewards card but is aimed at business owners. But when I say business owners, I mean ANY business!

Are you a tradesman? That’s a business. Run a shop? That’s business. Rent out a property? That’s a business. Sell things online? That’s a business. You may be eligible for this card when you didn’t realise you were.

I already have this card but if I didn’t I would be making it my next acquisition el pronto.

That’s because American Express are currently offering a whopping 60,000 Membership Reward Points as an enhanced welcome bonus, when you spend £6,000 in the first three months on the card. The standard offering is normally 20,000.

If you have a referral code, you can bump that up even higher to 65,000 MRPs. Again, contact me if you need instructions on how to achieve this.

The reason this offer is so good is because, like the Preferred Rewards card, there is no annual fee for the first 12 months. Cancel any time. Also, because it is a business card, you are still eligible for the welcome bonus, even if you hold or have previously held the Preferred Rewards (Gold) card.

If you have any sort of business and have not held the business card in the last 24 months, this really is a no-brainer. Take advantage of it whilst you can.

American Express Platinum Card

The Platinum card comes with a £650 annual fee, so could rule out a lot beginners or people who just don’t want to pay such high fee for a credit card.

The card is really aimed at seasoned travellers and comes with a whole host of features and benefits, which I’m not going to cover in this post but you can read about on the American Express website.

Usually the welcome bonus on this card is 50,000 MRPs, but the current promotional offer is for a very tempting 80,000 MRPs. That’s enough points to cover a British Airways peak time return flight for one person from London to Tokyo in Economy, if converted into Avios.

You need to spend £10,000 in the first six months of having the card to unlock the bonus.

Better still, if you have a selected referral code, you can increase that welcome bonus to an eye-watering 100,000 MRPs. Contact me if you want instructions on how to do this.

AMEX Business Platinum Card

The business version of the Platinum Card also comes with a hefty £650 fee, but the current welcome bonus offer is absolutely mental. However, you will need deep pockets or a good business cash flow to achieve it.

If you can spend £12,000 in the first three months of card membership, American Express will currently bless you with 120,000 MRPs. That’s 70,000 more than they normally offer without a promo deal in place!

Using a referral code increases this even further to 130,000 points. Give me a shout if you need a helping hand with this.

Act while you can

All four of these promotional offers are decent proprosals and I would not expect to see better offers for the rest of the year. The current promotions are in place until October 14, 2025, so now is the time to act if you want to take advantage.
